Elite Trainer Box vs Booster Box vs Booster Bundle: Which Pokémon TCG Product Should You Buy?
Share
Every Pokémon TCG set is released in several sealed formats. They all contain booster packs from the same set — the difference is how many packs you get and what comes with them. Here is a quick guide to choosing.
At a glance
| Product | Booster packs | Extras | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single booster pack | 1 | — | Trying a set |
| Booster bundle | 6 | — | A small opening or a gift |
| Elite Trainer Box (ETB) | 9 | Promo card, sleeves, Energy cards, dice, coin, storage box | New players, gifts, collectors |
| Pokémon Center ETB | 11 in recent sets | As an ETB, plus an extra promo with the Pokémon Center logo | Collectors |
| Half booster box | 18 | — | A proper opening session |
| Booster box | 36 | — | Opening a set in quantity, or keeping sealed |
Exact contents vary by set, so always check the product page. Special sets sometimes skip a format — for example, some special expansions are not released as standard booster boxes.
Elite Trainer Box (ETB)
An Elite Trainer Box is the all-in-one option. Alongside nine booster packs you get a promo card, card sleeves, a stack of Energy cards, damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die or coin, a player’s guide to the set and a sturdy box with dividers to store your cards. That makes it the natural choice for a gift or for someone starting to play.
For example, the Chaos Rising Elite Trainer Box contains 9 booster packs, a full-art Fennekin promo card, 65 card sleeves, 40 Energy cards, 6 damage-counter dice, a coin-flip die, a coin, a player’s guide and a storage box with 6 dividers.
Pokémon Center Elite Trainer Box
Pokémon Center ETBs are versions sold through the official Pokémon Center store. In recent sets they contain 11 booster packs instead of 9 and an extra copy of the promo card marked with the Pokémon Center logo. We explain the differences in detail in Pokémon Center ETB vs regular ETB.
Booster bundle
A booster bundle is simply six booster packs from one set in a single sealed package. There are no accessories, so it is a straightforward way to try a new set.
Half booster box and booster box
A booster box (also called a booster display) holds 36 packs from one set; a half booster box holds 18. If you mainly want to open packs and chase a set’s rarest cards, these give you the most packs in one sealed product. Many collectors also keep booster boxes sealed for display.
How to compare value
The fairest comparison is price per pack: divide the price by the number of booster packs. An ETB usually costs more per pack than a booster box because you are also paying for the accessories and promo card — worth it if you want them, less so if you only want packs. Prices for older or high-demand sets can change a lot, so compare per-pack prices for the specific set you want.
